Gianduja is a sweet chocolate confection containing about 30% hazelnut paste. It was invented in Turin, Italy, during Napoléon’s regency and based on a Carnival marionette character. Supposedly a chocolatier in Turin extended his chocolate by mixing it with hazelnuts from the Langhe hills south of Turin, and thus Gianduja was born!
Today there are many varieties made with more or less of the key ingredients: chocolate, sugar, milk and hazelnuts.
